These electric smokers come in either digital or analog controlled versions. Masterbuilt make a few standard grills but it’s the smokehouse range of BBQ smokers that makes them stand out.

They make smoking almost too easy - it's almost as simple as using a microwave oven.

I wasn't sure I liked the idea of an electric smoker, but there is no denying that they are easy to use, holding an exact temperature for as long as you desire - and the finished product is immaculate.

You can cook anything in them, brisket, pulled pork, chicken, steak, potatoes, or anything else.

..This is a very easy to use smoker that produces great results.. customer

Construction and Features

The basic features are as follows:

  • Steel construction
  • 100% insulation, no heat escapes
  • 800 watt
  • Both versions of the smoker are about the size of a small refrigerator. The analog one is on legs.
  • Internally, each has a compartment to put the wood chips in.
  • Another compartment holds a water tray for wet smoking
  • A drip tray
  • Both can be set at a specific temperature which is maintained consistently
  • Both can be set to run for a specific period of time
  • Both have four removable shelve
  • Timer runs up to 24 hours

If two of the trays are removed, they are big enough to smoke two big pieces of meat at one time – e.g. a leg of ham and a turkey. A neat trick is to put the ham on the shelf above the turkey and as it cooks, the drippings fall down and baste the turkey below.

The Analog Masterbuilt Smoker

Masterbuilt electric smoker analog

The analog Masterbuilt Analog Electric Smoker (pictured above) looks like a safe, tall black box with a dial on the front. Not a flattering description maybe, and at first I didn't like the sound of an electric smoker at all - where's the fun in that?!

But when you see how easy they are to use and what the finished results are like you see what the attraction is to some people.

Just fill the wood tray up with soaked wood chips, load it up with meat, adjust the thermostat to the required temperature - and off you go. There is also a water pan.

It should reach a temperature of 225F in about 15 minutes (although I told the air temperature affects this) and it will hold that temperature for as long as you require.

The Digital Masterbuilt Smoker

Masterbuilt Smoker - digital

The digital Masterbuilt barbecue smoker is as modern as smokers get. In fact using it really does feel like using a microwave oven as much as an electric smoker.

It has a few extra features that the analog version doesn’t. The temperature can be controlled to the exact degree at the push of a button and is maintained for the specified cooking time.

It also has a built in probe thermometer to monitor the internal temperature of the meat. So the door doesn’t need to be opened at any point until the smoking process is complete.

It has a viewing window and internal light and can be operated by RF remote! The digital version also comes in two sizes, a 30” and a 40” version

At the time of writing, the digital version has 240 reviews on, of which 200 are 4 or 5 star. Comments like:

"...I really don't want to learn to use a smoker, I just want to shove food in, push a button and have good eats when its done. So far, this smoker does exactly that..."

are fairly typical, and sum up what the Masterbuilt electric smoker does.

The Verdict

The Good

  • Very reasonable price
  • Fully automated BBQ smoker
  • Precise temperature control
  • Great for long duration BBQ smoking

The Bad

  • Takes skill/fun out of smoking food (might be a good point for some!)
  • Reports of being under-powered with a full load of food
  • Reports of high current tripping circuit breakers (although there is a fix - use a separate outdoor 20A circuit)
